Years after its cancellation, cult classic noir show Veronica Mars is back with a new season that finds its protagonist coming home to Neptune, California, but doesn’t offer comforting nostalgia. Set more than a decade after the third season ended — and a few years after the crowdfunded movie that came out in between — season 4 finds private investigator Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) back in Neptune and working with her father, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni). Spring break is in full swing, but the festivities take a violent turn when a bombing shatters the tranquility. Veronica gets to work hunting the bomber, but there is no shortage of suspects, and the bomber doesn’t intend to stop.

Inglourious Basterds

best new shows and movies to stream inglourious basterds

Quention Tarantino’s alternate-history World War II movie Inglourious Basterds follows various characters — whose paths may or may not overlap — hatching plans to assassinate Hitler. In one storyline, a group of American soldiers called the Basterds — led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) — pepper the Nazi troops throughout Europe using guerrilla tactics before teaming up with British intelligence in a plot to kill the führer himself. Meanwhile in occupied Paris, a Jewish woman named Shoshanna (Mélanie Laurent), whose family was killed by SS officer Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), gets a shot at revenge when an infatuated German soldier arranges to have a propaganda film debut at Shoshanna’s theater — with the entire Nazi high command in attendance. Inglourious Basterds is a wild movie, with terrific performances (particularly from Waltz) and some of the most tense scenes Tarantino has ever filmed.

Fifty years after American astronauts first set foot on the moon, the accomplishment remains awe-inspiring. The Boys season 1

best new shows and movies to stream the boys

If Marvel’s recent flurry of announcements is any indication, superheroes are here to stay. If you’re tired of shows and movies that pay guileless tribute to superhero antics, however, The Boys is a wonderfully cynical take on the genre. Based on a comic by Garth Ennis, The Boys is set in a world where superheroes are beloved by the public, despite the fact that they routinely endanger or even kill ordinary people through reckless (sometimes intentional) use of their powers. A man named Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid) learns firsthand how dangerous superpowers can be when a superfast hero named A-Train (Jessie Usher) kills Hughie’s girlfriend while sprinting around the city at sonic speeds. Hughie gets a shot at revenge when he is recruited by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), leader of a violent superhero watchdog group called The Boys, who are taking aim at the Seven, the most powerful superhero team in the world.

First Man

best new shows and movies to stream first man 2

After making two critically acclaimed films about musicians (Whiplash and La La Land), Damien Chazelle zagged into space with First Man, a biographical drama about astronaut Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission. The film begins in claustrophobic fashion, with Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) flying an X-15 to the edge of space, the fuselage rattling. After Armstrong’s harrowing landing, the film follows him and his family — including wife Janet (Claire Foy) — as they move to Houston so that Armstrong can join Project Gemini and pursue his goal of pushing beyond the atmosphere. Like Whiplash, First Man is about obsession, about the struggle a man will put himself and those around him through in pursuit of glory. It’s also a showcase for Chazelle, who does some of his best work yet.
