A fire outside a business in the area of Interstate 15 and Lake Mead Boulevard, which sent a plume of thick black smoke into the air Friday afternoon, caused about $1 million in damage, and is being blamed on arson, according to fire officials.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, which assisted fighting the blaze in North Las Vegas, described the structure involved as a large warehouse-type building.

Authorities had obtained a suspect description and were working on finding that person, officials said Friday night.

The fire was reported outside the building at 12:23 p.m. and a second alarm was sounded 10 minutes later, North Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Nino Galloway said.

The flames were contained within two hours and no one was injured, officials said.

However, it prompted the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada to warn people to use caution and beware of the heavy smoke. The fire was creating a fog of smoke and the smell of charred wood across the freeway.

There were road closures in the area.
