Here are the films scheduled to open this week in wide and limited release:

JUDY:  Renee Zellweger is earning raves for her portrayal of actress/singer Judy Garland in the final days of a life cut short by pills, booze and too many disappointments. Rupert Goold directs.

MONOS: A group of young Latin American soldiers learns to bond and have each other’s backs while holding an American woman (Julianne Nicholson) hostage. Then, everything goes terribly wrong.

MILES DAVIS – BIRTH OF THE COOL: Documentarian Stanley Nelson takes a deep dive into the life of trumpeter Miles Davis and the cultural icon’s drive to live life and play music on his own terms.

ABOMINABLE: This Universal animation feature involves a group of Shanghai misfits seeking redemption in returning a lost yeti to his home 3,000 miles away on Mount Everest.

BUNEL IN THE LABYRINTH OF THE TURTLES: In a considerably more cerebral animation, the life of filmmaker Luis Buñuel is explored as he embarks on a mind-changing experience in the poorest reaches of Spain.
