Downton Abbey has long been at home on the small screen, so when will it return?
It came and it conquered!
Julian Fellowes’ lavish TV series arrived on ITV back in 2010 and as 2019 gradually approaches a close it’s clear to see that Downton Abbey has crafted an enviable legacy across the decade.
Set on the fictional Yorkshire country estate spanning the years from 1912 to 1926, fans have been delighted to return for six seasons now, with the final one coming in 2015. Audiences missed having it on their screens, although it has remained a piece of work most have gone on to rewatch since it stopped airing.
Even then, when news of a Downton Abbey movie broke, the majority of the series’ admirers were shocked but thrilled by its potential. Set in 1927, it centres upon familiar favourites as they prepare to host for the king and queen. It turned out to be a cinematic hit, releasing in cinemas on Friday, September 13th 2019. But, when can we bring it home?
When will the Downton Abbey movie be released in cinemas and on DVD?
As of yet, Downton Abbey doesn’t have a home release date.
However, you can already pre-order your copy over on Amazon; it’s currently their top seller in the drama section!
For the DVD, the pre-order price is £11.99 and the Blu-ray price is £15.00. It’s definitely one you’ll want to be taking home, but considering there’s no date, when can we expect it?
The film was released in UK cinemas on Friday, September 13th 2019. It’s a pretty big release, and we can probably expect it to remain in cinemas for a solid month. Often, titles are released on DVD roughly three months after cinema exhibition. So, if Downton leaves around the middle of October, we can likely anticipate an early 2020 DVD release date.
That’s not to say it couldn’t be sooner though; release just before Christmas does sound ideal, but we’ll have to wait and see.
Twitter talks Downton!
There have been some great reactions to the film on Twitter as more and more flock to see it.
One fan wrote: “Downton Abbey movie just as delightful the second time around,” which definitely makes a DVD release feel even more necessary. Another added: “…honestly, I loved every second of this movie. If, like me, you have seen every single episode and enjoyed them, then you’ll love this…” Similarly, one viewer expressed: “The Downton Abbey movie was beautiful, nostalgic and charming.”
Although, as one Twitter user hilariously puts it: “If the Downton Abbey film was a proper TV spin-off movie it would be about the regular cast going on holiday to Spain with hilarious consequences.”
What do the critics think?
If you’re a regular moviegoer, you’ll know that critics and audiences tend to be even more divided recently. Yet, that doesn’t seem to be the case here.
Currently, the film has an IMDb audience score of 7.8, but which is really impressive – any release would be humbled to have it. Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 80% fresh rating, gathered from a sizeable seventy reviews. It has a Metascore of 59, determined by seventeen reviews, which doesn’t seem to quite accurately reflect the general consensus.
It’s been received a lot better than many anticipated, so if you’re yet to see it, head to the cinemas and check it out! If you’re patient, on the other hand, we’ll be sure to keep a keen eye out for updates regarding the DVD release date.
