Arabs living in the Middle East and Africa believe Democrat Joe Biden would be better suited as president of the United States, especially for their region, according to a YouGov poll released Monday.

While a majority of those polled considered neither Biden nor President Donald Trump good for the region, 40% said Biden would be better for the region while 12% said the same thing about Trump.

But Arabs say Biden, who served as vice president under former President Barack Obama, should distance himself from Obama’s policies.

Trump in late October announced that Israel and Sudan had opened economic ties as a pathway toward normalized relations, with Sudan becoming the third Arab state to formally set aside hostilities in recent weeks.

The poll also found:

  • 89% of Arabs opposed Trump’s 2017 decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
  • 52% of Palestinians agree that the U.S. should play a bigger role in Israel-Palestine mediation, while 48% disagree.
  • 76% of respondents said they believe in the significance of the next U.S. president and his impact on the Arab world in 2021.
  • 49% said neither candidate would be good for the Middle East and North Africa, or MENA, region.
  • 53% said Obama left the region worse off when he was president.
  • 58% said Biden should distance himself from Obama-era policies.

The study surveyed a sample of 3,097 respondents online to find out how people in the MENA region feel about the U.S. elections.
